Songs
Justin has been writing songs and singing them live since 2009, writing and singing for a variety of collaborative bands before launching his solo outlet Ravary in late 2015.
Born in London and having spent the summers of his formative years with French-speaking family near Montreal, Justin's music is equally inspired by the synths and guitars of the 90's Britpop movement as the large folky hooks of Arcade Fire and traditional Quebecois and North Carolinian folk music.
Justin started recording his debut album in early 2018 with various friends and collaborators, and finished it in early 2020 between various tours and side jobs - which allowed plenty of time to implement new ideas and tinker with existing ones. In 2019 Justin entered that year’s NPR Tiny Desk Contest, was featured on All Songs Considered, and started playing out more regularly - sometimes solo on guitar, sometimes with a band, hopping between guitar, bass, and synth. Ravary played to capacity crowds at The Station for the 2019 Carrboro Music Festival and at the Forest Theatre on UNC’s campus. Justin released his first two singles (“I Echo” and “Finally”) independently in February 2020, with the latter being placed in rotation at WUNC Music. He was also a featured performer on WUNC’s “The State of Things” that month.
The debut Ravary album “Hands To Feel” released on all major streaming platforms on June 9th 2020.
In May 2022, Ravary released “Glowing”, a single recorded that previous November at Sunday Coffee, a recording studio and production house in Washington DC. “Glowing” was added into rotation at WUNC Music. More songs will be recorded with Sunday Coffee in April 2023, along with a handful of upcoming shows.
Justin has played or currently plays Fender, Epiphone, and Ibanez acoustic and electric guitars. His favorite players are Peter Buck, Johnny Marr, and John Squire. As a singer and songwriter, Justin is most influenced by Peter Gabriel, Guy Garvey, Thom Yorke, and Michael Stipe.
In June 2021, Justin formed the trio Slow Teeth with local musicians Jeremy Haire (guitar) and Rob Chamberlain (drums, synthesizers) - returning to his roots as a more collaborative songwriter in tandem with Ravary.
